Anyone who does any of the three will be corrected in public, and it may as well be us.

Tier 3 is greyscale and hatched to mean cited. A genuine micrograph is greyscale because the detector captured no colour. They look superficially alike and they are opposite things. If an instrument plate ever takes a Tier 3 matte, the system has said “we did not produce this” about the one image the company paid to produce — or a reader concludes the reverse and treats a cited image as instrument output. Instrument plates take a white matte and the INSTRUMENT label class. Never the card matte. Never the hatch.

Scale bars, nm, n =, panel letters, error bars and FFT insets are reserved for things an instrument actually produced. Illustration is allowed; illustration dressed as measurement is not.
